The ISEE Lower Level is administered to students applying to grades 5 and 6 at private and independent schools. For most families, this is the transition point out of public elementary school and into an independent middle school. Since 6th grade is the primary entry point for many independent middle schools, the Lower Level is often the first standardized admissions test a child will take.
The test is identical for both grades. ERB compares your child only against other students in their exact current grade (that's what the stanine score does), but the questions themselves are the same. That means a 4th grader (applying for 5th) sees the exact same math and vocabulary as a 5th grader (applying for 6th). And because the test is designed to differentiate top-percentile 5th-grade applicants, the ceiling reaches into 6th-grade Common Core content.
The good news. Your child doesn't need to answer every question correctly. The test intentionally reaches beyond what any single grade has been taught, and stanines only compare your child to other students in their exact current grade. Recognizing which questions are calibrated for older applicants — and when to skip them — matters.
The harder news. A 9- or 10-year-old seeing algebra or coordinate geometry for the first time in a timed room is going to feel it. Most parents don't have a frame of reference for what's "normal" at this age, and it's easy to misread an unfamiliar question type as a knowledge gap when it's really a curriculum sequencing gap. A note on our benchmark. This gap analysis assumes your child is coming from a public school on the Common Core standards. States and schools differ, and private, parochial, and homeschool curricula vary widely. Your child's specific case may look different depending on their school, but in broad strokes, Common Core is a reasonable baseline for typical grade-level exposure.
By the end of 3rd grade Common Core, students have mastered multi-digit addition and subtraction, multiplication tables, basic division, area of rectangles, and simple visual fractions. By the end of 4th grade, they add multi-digit multiplication and division, decimals to hundredths, fractions with the same denominator, and basic angle measurement.
The ISEE Lower Level, however, tests abstract reasoning, variables, and data analysis — content Common Core doesn't introduce until 5th or 6th grade. Here is where the typical gaps lie, mapped by grade.
Their baseline. They've completed 3rd grade Common Core, and in the fall they're starting 4th grade material. They know multiplication tables through 10, basic division, area of rectangles, and simple visual fractions like 1/2 or 1/4.
For many 4th graders coming from the Common Core curriculum, the ISEE Lower Level will present a lot of concepts that haven't yet been introduced — order of operations, formal fractions with different denominators, coordinate geometry, and early algebra. Prep isn't about cramming three years of math into a summer — it's about being strategic about which questions are in reach and which are safely skipped.

5th graders are in a much stronger position than 4th graders. The mechanics of arithmetic are mostly there. The ISEE tests abstract reasoning and data analysis that Common Core doesn't formalize until 5th or 6th grade, but many of these gaps are bridgeable with targeted practice.

Closing these specific gaps produces the biggest score gains for 6th-grade applicants. A 5th grader can learn averages, function-table rules, and one-step equations in a few focused practice sessions.
For 9- and 10-year-olds, the reading and verbal sections are less about missing concepts and more about cognitive endurance and vocabulary exposure.
Common Core at this age focuses on reading fluency and context clues within grade-level fiction. The ISEE introduces abstract, "Tier 2" academic vocabulary that rarely shows up in middle-grade novels.

Younger students are used to reading stories with characters, a setting, and a plot. The ISEE deliberately uses dry, informational texts to test focus and endurance. A passage on the life cycle of plant seeds in bombed-out vacant lots in London, for example, has no narrative arc to pull the student through. Their attention drifts, and careless errors follow.
