  • Two halves. First half is word problems that test mathematical thinking, not arithmetic — most require little to no calculation or simple mental math.
  • Second half is a new format for Middle Level: quantitative comparisons. Two quantities appear in Column A and Column B, and your child picks which is greater, whether they're equal, or whether it can't be determined.
  • This format is unfamiliar to most students seeing it for the first time.
  • Covers numbers/operations, pre-algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability.
Reading Comprehension 36 Q / 35 min

  • Six short passages (arts, contemporary life, history, science) with six questions each.
  • Question types: main idea, supporting detail, vocabulary in context, inference, passage structure, and author's tone.
  • Passages are grade-appropriate in length, but the inference and tone questions are more nuanced than what most 6th/7th graders see in school, where reading questions are usually literal.
Mathematics Achievement 47 Q / 40 min

  • The arithmetic-and-execution section. No calculators.
  • Six skill areas: whole numbers, decimals and fractions, algebraic concepts (now a significant chunk at Middle Level — expressions, equations, patterns), geometry, measurement, and data.
  • ISEE draws from the top end of grade-6/7 curriculum standards, so gaps in fractions, percents, ratios, or multi-step algebra show up fast.

Who takes the Middle Level, and why grade matters

The ISEE Middle Level is administered to students applying to grades 7 and 8. The test is identical for both grades. ERB compares your child only against other students in their exact current grade (that's what the stanine score does), but the questions themselves are the same.

That means a 6th grader (applying for 7th) sees the exact same math and vocabulary as a 7th grader (applying for 8th). The Middle Level is designed to differentiate the top percentiles of 8th-grade applicants, so the ceiling of the test goes years beyond Common Core 6th and 7th-grade standards.

The good news. Your child doesn't need to answer every question correctly. The test intentionally reaches beyond what any single grade has been taught, and stanines only compare your child to other students in their exact current grade. Recognizing which questions are calibrated for older applicants — and when to skip them — is half the battle.

The harder news. Even though your kid isn't expected to know it all, running into a stack of unfamiliar problems in a timed room takes a toll. The Common Core reality check

A note on our benchmark. This gap analysis assumes your child is coming from a public school on the Common Core standards. States and schools differ, and private, parochial, and homeschool curricula vary widely. Your child's specific case may look different depending on their school, but in broad strokes, Common Core is a reasonable baseline for typical grade-level exposure.

By the end of 5th grade Common Core, students have mastered fractions with unlike denominators, decimals, order of operations, coordinate plane basics (positive quadrant), and the area and volume of basic shapes. By the end of 6th grade, they add ratios, percentages, negative numbers, all four coordinate quadrants, and one-step equations like 2x + 4 = 12.

The ISEE Middle Level, however, expects them to manipulate algebraic expressions, understand non-linear geometry, calculate compound probabilities, and know academic vocabulary rarely covered in middle school reading lists. Here is where the typical gaps lie, mapped by grade.

6th graders: applying for 7th grade

Their baseline. They've completed 5th grade Common Core, and in the fall they're starting 6th grade material. They know fractions with unlike denominators, decimals, basic geometry (area and volume), and the coordinate plane in the positive quadrant.

For most students used to the Common Core curriculum, the ISEE Middle Level will present a lot of concepts they haven't yet encountered, or have only just touched on in early 6th grade (pre-algebra fundamentals, ratios, negative numbers). Prep isn't about cramming two years of curriculum into a month — it's about focusing on what's in reach and surfacing new concepts one at a time.

Most of this table is content your child will learn in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. It hasn't been taught yet, and it's not supposed to be. The strategic play is to skip these on test day and put study time into subskills that are in reach.

7th graders: applying for 8th grade

Their baseline. They've completed 6th grade Common Core, and in the fall they're starting 7th grade material. They know ratios, percentages, negative numbers, the coordinate plane in all four quadrants, and one-step equations.

7th graders are in a better position than 6th graders, but the Middle Level ISEE tests up to 8th grade and Algebra 1 content. Since most families take the test in the fall, most of the 7th grade curriculum hasn't been taught yet either.

Verbal & reading gap

The math gaps are structural. The verbal gaps are developmental. A rising 6th or 7th grader reads well, but the ISEE tests a specific type of academic vocabulary and reading endurance.

The "Tier 2" vocabulary gap

Common Core focuses on reading comprehension over rote vocabulary memorization. The ISEE tests "Tier 2" words — high-frequency academic words that are rarely used in casual conversation or middle-grade fiction.

The abstract reading gap

6th and 7th grade reading heavily features narrative fiction and straightforward informational texts. The ISEE uses dense, high-school-level historical and scientific synthesis passages.

Passages on the ISEE often lack a traditional narrative arc. A passage on the discovery of Neptune, for example, requires the student to track competing scientific hypotheses and understand words like perturbing and eccentric in a specialized scientific context, not their everyday meanings.
