Two testing windows. In-person testing at ISEE test centers runs August through February on set dates. Remote-proctored at-home testing runs year-round with far more scheduling flexibility. Most private-school applications close between December and February, so most families aim for a test date about 6 to 8 weeks before their earliest deadline.

Students may take the ISEE once per testing season. There are three seasons in each 12-month admission cycle:

• Fall: August through November
• Winter: December through March
• Spring / Summer: April through July

Most families schedule one attempt in the season that lines up with their application deadlines, and hold a second season in reserve as a retake option if needed.

Both formats use the same test content and scoring. The choice usually comes down to your child's testing style and your logistics.

In-person at an ISEE test center is best for kids who focus better in a structured, quiet room away from home and household distractions. Set dates, less flexibility, but nothing to set up on your end.

At-home remote-proctored testing is best for families who want scheduling flexibility, live far from a test center, or have a child who tests better in familiar surroundings. You'll need a reliable computer with webcam and mic, a quiet room, and a stable internet connection. A live proctor watches the entire test through the webcam.

Both formats are digital. Some in-person centers still offer paper-based, but on a very limited schedule. Since almost every student now tests digitally, ISEE Coach is browser-based so your kid practices in the exact format they'll see on test day.

Registration is through E3n, the nonprofit that provides the ISEE: ISEE registration at admission.org. As of the current admission cycle, the base test fee is around $150 (in-person or at-home; the fee is the same). Some families qualify for a reduced fee; check the registration site for the current fee-waiver criteria.

Your registration includes score reports sent directly to the schools you designate on your ISEE account. Additional score reports and rush scoring cost extra. All exact fees are on the registration site since they update yearly.

Buy another 90 days. If your access is still active when you buy again, the new 90 days get added on top of your remaining time. You don't lose any days by renewing early.

Payments run through Stripe, the same processor Shopify and Notion use, so we never see or store your card number. Your child's practice data (name, level, attempts, progress) stays private to your account. We don't sell it, share it with advertisers, or hand it to outside AI companies for training.

This is the most common gap we see, and it is not a practice problem. It is a content problem. A 4th grader sitting the Lower Level, or a 6th grader sitting the Middle Level, is tested on material the older kids in their band have already been taught in school. Giving a child practice questions on a concept they have never been taught just teaches them that math is scary.

So we built the fix, and we made it free: Numbercade. It is an arcade of eight browser games that teach the concepts (lessons first, then challenges) rather than just quizzing them: fractions and fraction operations, ratios and percents, order of operations, solving and setting up equations, slope, geometry, roots and exponents, and probability. Between them they cover the math concepts needed for the ISEE Lower and Middle levels. Upper Level content is coming.

No. Actual ISEE questions are copyrighted and can't be reproduced anywhere. Every question in ISEE Coach is original content, written to closely mirror the ISEE in question type, topic coverage, difficulty, and format. Your kid should walk into the real test recognizing the structure of every question type they see.

No. ISEE Coach is an independent study tool. The ISEE is provided by E3n, the nonprofit formed in March 2026 when ERB and EMA merged, and ISEE Coach is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by E3n.

There is overlap as both are admission tests for independent and private schools. But the SSAT is a distinct test with its own format: it uses analogies (the ISEE doesn't), it has two Quantitative sections instead of the ISEE's Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement. A critical difference is SSAT subtracts a quarter point for a wrong answer, whereas ISEE does not penalize wrong answers. Meta-analysis of 118 randomized experiments; applying a concept to a fresh problem immediately after learning it produces substantially better transfer than restudying.

It's built on the retrieval-with-transfer literature (see the research FAQ above). "Similar" here is what cognitive scientists call an isomorphic problem: it looks different on the surface (different numbers, different scenario) but requires the same underlying logic to solve. When a student gets a question wrong, reads the walkthrough, and is then handed a fresh isomorphic problem, they can't shortcut by remembering the original answer. They have to actually apply the concept to a new scenario. That kind of transfer is what makes learning stick long-term.
